How to style the basics

We all love our basic clothing. Maybe even too much that our outfits start to look a bit boring or “basic” but that can be reversed. Here we are going to tell you how to style your basic clothes.

The first thing you need to know when styling any basic clothing (and by basic I mean t-shirts, jeans, tank tops, white bottom ups, etc.) is that to have a balanced outfit you need a piece of “statement” clothing. Which can be anything that is not that normal. Anything that stands out. The statement clothing can be a pair of shoes, a coat, pants, or even accessories like a handbag or jewelry. But be careful, you don’t want to have many statement pieces, then you can overwhelm people with your outfit and can seem like it's “too much”. Here you can see what the statement pieces can do to your outfit.

Now, if what you want is to have a more lowkey outfit that does not stand out as much, but you still want it to look pretty and different, here is what you can do to fix some of the most common basics.

The cropped tank top

This piece of clothing is an essential, the base to any outfit. You can basically wear whatever with this and it will look good. And the best thing is, it is super accessible and can find it in any store you walk in. The downside to this is that due to the accessibility and prettiness of this item, everyone has it and now it feels almost impossible to wear it uniquely. So here are some ideas to wear it a little bit different than how everyone else is wearing it.

With a blazer and suit pants. This will give the tank top a more “fancy” look if you want to wear it to work or to a formal evening. Though it being cropped makes you look young and sexy. With this try to have the blazer and the pants be the same color and the tank top and the shoes the same color. Or… it will also look awesome with the shoes being a vibrant color.

My favorite way of wearing it and how I wear them all the time is with a leather coat or jacket with matching pants or jeans. Depending on your mood or the occasion. This will give you bad bitch vibes, not gonna lie. And you certainly will feel like one too. And if you want to spice up the outfit you can complement it with chunky gold jewelry and black or brown (the color of the leather) cateye sunglasses. Wow. The power.

We’re aware that the tank top is one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing ever made, so the rest of the outfit can be made to look comfy but chic. And the way to obtain this is to wear it with your favorite pair of pants and chunky sneakers. The chunky sneakers are important. Without them the outfit will seem careless, and if that's what you want go for it! But what we are looking for right now is how to make it more fashionable, so the shoes will give it the balance and be the “statement” piece in this occasion.

The button up shirt

This can be one of my top essentials, I absolutely love them, the RANGE this has is just...wow. I love how this can change your look so drastically, also with this you can use the same shirt to different occasions/events. You can never go wrong with this shirt no matter how you decide to put it on.

One way of styling it that - not gonna lie could be a little uncomfortable after a while unless you wear it with a bralette, is wearing it with only the last buttons buttoned giving it a V-neck look. This, combined with whatever style of jeans and chunky jewelry, will look like a million dollar outfit. Just make sure you tuck down your shirt otherwise will be even more uncomfortable to use. Also, not only you can wear this with jeans but also with dress pants of any color. For shoes we recommend using heels, loafers or low heeled shoes. This is the perfect outfit to go to work with. Looks professional but cute.

The knot. A very unique way of styling the button up shirt, and certainly very comfortable. You can even button some of the middle buttons if you don't want much cleavage but that is up to you. This look is perfect for brunching or a casual picnic. You can style it however you want. And the blouse can even be any color. Though we love how it looks with a denim skirt.

Lastly is to wear it open with a tank top under. Wearing it like this can give you many opportunities on the color palette you choose for the outfit, so choose the colors wisely. Try to only use three colors. Again, you can use this with jeans, dress pants, etc. The only restriction this way of using the shirt can be using it with a skirt. Especially a long skirt. I do not think that would look very good, but if you manage to make it work you go!

The graphic T-shirt

The basics of the basics. Literally everyone has one of these. Maybe the most popular essential there is. And with many many ways to use it, thanks to the diversity and colors it has you can use a graphic t-shirt with any style you want, either streetstyle, grunge, preppy, etc.

With a blazer, coat, or jacket. This will make a casual but cute look to go maybe for coffee, to school, etc. Try to use a blazer that has matching colors with the shirt, this will make it visually appealing and not cause too much chaos to your outfit

Oversized with biker shorts. This look is very trendy right now, but we can’t assure you it will last. The biker shorts have recently been a controversial piece that not everyone finds pretty. But you do you, if you find this look as pretty as us, go for it. This look will go best if you have a cross bag or a fanny pack like in the picture above.

Lastly, use it with baggy pants. I love how this looks, straight up streetwear. Every time you use the graphic shirts this way I can assure you you’ll feel like a celebrity. Especially if you use it with colored pants and chunky shoes or slim heels. The chunky shoes will make it the perfect casual look. On the other side if you use it with heels it will make it classier perfect for meetings.

We hope this helped you figure out how to wear your basics because we know how hard it can be to combine it with nice stuff from time to time. Remember this is just inspo, and we did not cover all of the basics. You can use them however you want and if you have other ways of using them, send us a message and we can make a blog with other basics!
